Changes in Methodology

The following changes have been made to the AppliedHE Private University Ranking: ASEAN & Asia-Pacific 2023 as compared to the 2022 edition:

  • Expanded Scope to now includes ASEAN and Asia-Pacific countries, and any locally accredited private institution of higher learning that award their own Bachelor- and Master-degrees. This definition avoids the large variation in institutions called “universities” in different ASEAN and Asia-Pacific countries
  • Student-Faculty Ratio has been added to the Quality of Teaching and Learning indicators with a weight of 5%, while the remaining 35% is measured using AppliedHE’s own student surveys. The ratio was added to give some weight to the available teaching manpower available at universities
  • Definition for Counting Faculty and Students was further clarified and specified, see the updated methodology document for details
  • AppliedHE Student Survey Minimum Response Threshold was redefined to a “minimum response rate of 40% of the current student body, or 350 student responses, whichever is lower.” This measure closely resembles sample sizes for a normal distribution with a 95% confidence interval and 5% error, and is more simple and consistent as compared to the old thresholds
  • Peer Institution Nomination Process will now occur after data submission to ensure institutions can only nominate other universities participating in the ranking process. Nominating other institutions will be mandatory for participation in the ranking
  • Publication of Key Data will take place for all institutions, and will include data like student and faculty numbers. This is to allow peer-review of the data by all participants of the higher education community. We hope this step will enhance the transparency and reliability of the ranking
